Theos research separates Christian national identity from religious commitment
Theos analyzed responses from 1,765 UK adults to distinguish attitudes toward Christian heritage, national identity, and promoting Christian belief.
In its October 11 publication, researchers Nick Spencer and Yinxuan Huang reported that 8% strongly agreed that being Christian was necessary to be truly British, with another 9% slightly agreeing.
Their analysis identified five positions rather than treating all support for Christian national identity as equivalent. Only 1% selected Christianity as the most important characteristic of being truly British.
