Lombardy study finds greater unaffiliation among second-generation migrants

The BOnD study reports a larger unaffiliated share among second-generation than first-generation respondents with migrant backgrounds in Lombardy.

The project surveyed 2,800 Lombardy residents ages 18–65 between December 2024 and March 2025. Its reported unaffiliated share was 23.7% among second-generation respondents and 11.3% among first-generation respondents.

The study was reported July 27 and is regional and cross-sectional. It cannot establish that Europe caused secularization, represent all migrant communities in Italy, or predict later generations.
